The Animal Care Center of St. John, Inc, a non-profit organization, was founded on the island in the 1970 by a handful of residents operating from home. A small shack, built in 1985 allowed visiting veterinarians to care for animals for nearly 20 years before a new facility opened in 2003. Animal care in St. John is now an ambitious initiative dedicated to the well-being and care of the island's homeless, abandoned and abused animals. It features an adoption center, with available space to house animals awaiting good homes, a food supply program for "bush" cats, a trap-neuter-return program and a humane trap rental program. Wagapalooza is the organization's major fundraiser to generate revenue for animal care programs.
