Suriname's red hot pagaras
Explosive celebration
by virginvoices.com staff
New Year's Eve in Suriname is called Oud jaar, or "old year." It is celebrated by massive amounts of firecracker displays called pagara.
Every year the length of them is compared, and high praises are given to the company that has managed to import the largest ribbon.
These celebrations start at 10 a.m. and finish the next day. Street parties are already at full capacity at dusk. The most popular fiesta is the one that is held at café 't Vat in the main tourist district. People part until 11p.m., then go home ot light their pagaras at midnight. Then the parties continue and the streets fill again until daybreak.
