Famous playwright helps community theater
The essence of grace
virginvoices.com staff
It’s a tropical tale, stranger than fiction.
When members of St. Croix’s Caribbean Community Theater decided to present the play Grace and Glorie, which has been performed on Broadway to rave reviews from the New York Times, and featured in the Hallmark Hall of Fame, they didn’t have a clue the play’s playwright Tom Ziegler was living on the island.
And Ziegler, didn’t’ have any idea the community theater was producing what the New York Times called his" sentimental odd couple crowd pleaser."
Ziegler and CCT’s producing director Eileen Bishop Des Jardins were put in touch with Tom after Ziegler called Virgin Voice in response to our e-mail request for use of his photo in a release about the play.
Ziegler moved to St. Croix, after retiring from his post at Washington and Lee University in Virginia where he taught playwriting and scenic design. He and his wife Shirley offered to attend some rehearsals and help with the production.
Recent reports says Ziegler is helping out the production in many ways, including builidng parts of the set.
And Shirley has been teaching Gospel songs to the cast.
