Company House hotel
Historic gem in St. Croix

Step into the Company House in the heart of downtown Christiansted in St. Croix, and you’ll find yourself in the soul of authenticity.
The property, which formerly operated as the Danish Manor, was sold in 2007. Now years of restoration, rejuvenation and expansion are complete, making The Company House Hotel a showcase for Danish architecture, European ambiance and Crucian hospitality.
The lobby, furnished with antique mahogany shipped from Denmark and native pieces from St. Croix, is punctuated with European accents. An antique drum table from England, silk drapes from France, and Italian vases and lamps are befitting a historic building, once the site of the Danish West India Company.
General manager Earl Powell says the hotel’s owner, Hans Probst, who lives in Denmark, wanted to restore the hotel to its architectural integrity, while adding all the amenities desired by the modern traveler. Powell, says Pobst was hands on when he was in St.Croix and via daily telephone communiques from Denmark.
Special compounds to cure the property’s ancient walls took days to cure, before the next step in restoration could begin. Powell acknowledged faster and less expensive options existed, but observes it wouldn’t have been the proper kind of restoration.
The result of two years of painstaking work is evident everywhere from the Victor Borge lobby piano bar, named after the great pianist who had a home in St. Croix, to the top deck in the three level boutique hotel.
Its 34 rooms have been completely revamped and now the tropical themed gems include air conditioning and flat screen TV. Finishing touches are being made to a spacious conference room with state of the art technology playing counterpoint to the property’s Old World charm.
